JP: Deconstruction of Music Video 3

Dying Fetus - 'Your Treachery Will Die With You'

Institution and Audience
  • This video would be consumed through ambient viewing as it is entirely performance and a focused viewing would simply be done by those interested in the performance style.
  • The record label would play a large a role in creating this promotional text through industrial production as it has been made to promote the band as true performers from the sub-genre of Technical Death metal; entirely about the music.
Genre and Narrative

Using Archer Goodwin's theories (from "Dancing in the Distraction Factory"), you can see clear conventions of performance based music videos as a whole such as:
  • A clear demonstration of the death metal genre characteristics with a relentless performance
  • A disjuntice relationship between lyrics and visuals (due to the solely performance basis of the video)
  • An illustrative relationship between music and visuals (throughout the video the performance is edited to be synced perfectly to the music)
  • A large amount of CUs on performers (such as on the lead singer during the lyric "Envy was a poisonous effect and on the bassist's picking hand during the lyric "Trust an afterthought")
The video itself would most probably not be considered art as it was made for promotional use, displaying the bands pure intent of publicising their music and performance capability.
Media Language
  • There is no clear message being expressed other than the performance capability of the band therefore constructing that band image as such.
  • This is done through the visual techniques including the variety of CUs and BCUs of their performance (on instruments and faces) and combination of tracking handicam intercut with static shots.
Representation

Using Richard Dyer's theories (from "Stars" and "Heavenly Bodies: Film Stars and Society"), you can see the conventions of stars and stardom being explored through the band such as:
  • Star qualities including rebellion, an anti-authoritarian attitude, originality, creativity / talent, and aggression / anger.
The idelogical discourse is ambiguous due to the entirely performance basis, however it does portray dominant ideologies of true talent's need to be exposed and shown to consumers for entertainment.

  2. Joe, you only need to apply two of the areas to this music video and some of your comments are sounding a bit generic over the three videos, I would delete the more formulaic bits of this post and focus on two areas that you could say something specific and detailed about. Let me know when you have improved on this post.
